TEMPE – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team fell 4-0 to No. 30 VCU in their second match of the Diablos College Tennis Invitational at the Kiwanis Tennis Center on Saturday.
In their second day of competition against a ranked team the Lopes (2-8) battled hard in both singles and doubles. With the loss the Lopes will face No. 51 Liberty on Sunday in the final day of the Diablos Invite.
Doubles started with VCU (5-5) clinching the point with wins over the Lopes at the top two courts. GCU graduate

David Wekesa lost 6-1 at court one and GCU sophomore duo
Alfred Almasi and
Paolo Rosati lost 6-1.
In singles with the lead in hand, the Rams put pressure on the Lopes by winning the first set on five of the six courts. Wekesa moved up to the No. 2 court and fell in straight sets while Almasi battled No. 98 ranked Romain Gales and lost 6-4, 6-2. The win for VCU was clinched by German Samofalov with a straight set win over GCU senior

The Lopes saw strong play by junior
Jonathan Da Silva at court four. Da Silva took the first set 6-4 over VCU's Tristan Piombo 6-2 and had just started his third set when his match was left unfinished.
The Lopes will be back in action next weekend on the road at Cal Poly with matches against DePaul and the host Mustangs on March 9 and 10.
