SEATTLE – The Grand Canyon men's soccer team fell 5-0 at Seattle U on Sunday in its regular-season finale.
With the loss, GCU (5-10-3, 2-6-1 WAC) is eliminated from qualifying for the six-team WAC Tournament.
Seattle U (10-4-3, 7-1-1 WAC) scored two goals in the first half with the first coming in the 10th minute and the second following five minutes later. It was only the second time this season that the Lopes allowed two goals in the first half.
GCU had eight shots in the first half, the first nearly being a goal as senior forward
Ben Assane curled a ball from 20 yards out to the right post, hitting the iron and deflecting left. Lopes junior forward
Bright Nutornutsi gathered it, but his shot attempt was sent wide left of the goal.
Seattle U added three goals in the second half to become the first team to score five goals on GCU since San Jose State in 2015. The Lopes recorded 13 shots for the day but were shut out for the third consecutive match.
GCU senior goalkeeper
Leon Schmidt made eight saves and ends his collegiate career with 226 career stops, including 198 in a Lopes uniform to set the program's Division I-era record.
