CARMEL, Calif. – In its final tournament of the fall season, Grand Canyon put itself in good position to achieve a fourth straight top-five finish, carding a 1-over score through 36 holes Monday at The Preserve Golf Club Collegiate.
GCU is sixth out of 13 teams and four shots back of fifth-place Colorado State. Second-round play was suspended due to darkness, but the Lopes were one of four teams to complete all 36 holes Monday.
Lopes freshman
Matthew Diehl is tied for 14th with seven birdies after an even-par first round and 2-under second round. Diehl's second round began 1 over through four holes before he notched four birdies over his final 14, including back-to-back ones on holes 1 and 2.
Two shots back of Diehl is GCU graduate Tomasso Zorzetto, who is even par after a 1-under second round. Zorzetto locked in after a bogey on 13 with nine pars and two birdies over his final 11 holes.
Lopes freshman
Nixon Lauritzen is one back of Zorzetto at 1 over and led the Lopes with 10 birdies for his day. The California native was five over through his first 12 holes but finished strongly with four birdies on his final six holes, including three straight to end his round.
GCU sophomore
Gavin O'Neill is 6 over and tied for 50th, while senior teammate
Kiko Coelho is 7 over and tied for 56th. Lopes senior
Josh McCabe, playing as an individual, is 6 over and tied with O'Neill in 50th with two second-round holes left to play.
GCU leads the entire field with 117 pars with 30 birdies for the tournament. Diehl is tied for first in par-5 scoring, carding a 5-under score on such holes.
Once other teams complete their second rounds Tuesday morning, the final round will begin for the Lopes.
