Leon Schmidt was named WAC Goalkeeper of the Week for his efforts in the Lopes' road games against Creighton and Omaha this holiday weekend.
Schmidt had a career day in aiding GCU to a 2-1 victory on Friday at Creighton, which was receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll. Schmidt, who is from Hamburg, Germany, totaled a personal-best eight saves with five coming in the first half. He followed that up with six saves at Omaha on Monday for 14 during the Nebraska road trip.
Schmidt has tallied 24 saves this season and has stopped at least five shots in each of the Lopes' four games. His save total ranks third in the nation and is 10 higher than second place in the WAC. He is also tied for eighth in the country with 6.0 saves per game.
For his GCU career, Schmidt has recorded 74 saves in 18 starts. He surpassed the 100-career save mark in Monday's contest against the Mavericks.
The Lopes begin the first of four straight home matches on Friday against Stetson at 7 p.m.
