The Grand Canyon women's tennis team will kick off the fall season this weekend with trips to the Lumberjack Classic in Flagstaff and the Milwaukee Classic.
Â
Top returners
Natasha Puehse and
Santa Strombacha will head to Milwaukee for the first time as they compete at the Western Racquet Club. The Milwaukee Classic is an Intercollegiate Tennis Association Gold Event, meaning the men's and women's singles champions will receive a wild card into the ITA Fall National Championships on Nov. 1-5.
Â
Puehse and Strombacha will compete in the open singles draw before teaming up in doubles. Last spring was a banner year for both players, as Strombacha had 21 wins in singles and Puehse went 18-2 at the No. 1 singles position. Both were lights out in doubles, going 16-3 at the top court with an 8-1 record in conference play.
Â
Meanwhile, a quartet of Lopes will be in action up in Flagstaff in a four-team event. GCU will send returners
Dania Deaifi and
Valentina Del Marco alongside newcomers
Valeriia Krokhotina and
Iva Sepa. The Lumberjack Classic will feature singles and doubles with 24 players from host Northern Arizona, Tulsa and New Mexico.
Â
Deaifi and Del Marco return for the Lopes after a strong spring season. Deaifi had 10 wins in singles, including a 6-3 record in conference play while teaming up with Del Marco in doubles and finishing 4-3 in WAC play. In singles, Del Marco collected six wins from the No. 6 position.
