For the second consecutive week, Grand Canyon was honored by the WAC in its weekly player of the week honors as juniors
Clayton Duarte and
Leon Schmidt received Defender and Goalkeeper of the week, respectively.
It is the second straight weekly award for Schmidt, who had 14 saves and aided GCU to a 2-1 victory at Creighton two weeks ago. Schmidt tallied six saves and earned his first shutout of the season on Friday at home versus Stetson, bringing his season total to 30. His save total ranks fifth in the country while his average of 6.0 saves per game ranks ninth.
Duarte scored the second of three goals against the Hatters in the Friday home opener and extended his point streak to three games. He has two goals and an assist in the Lopes' last three contests, with goals in back-to-back games. Duarte is second on the team in points (five) and is tied for second in the WAC in goals.
GCU stays home for the next two weeks, facing UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Lopes host San Diego on Saturday before closing out the four-game homestand on Sept. 20 versus Houston Christian.
