Sam Murphy, who competed in the Lopes' first-ever NCAA regional tournament three weeks ago, tied for second place this week in the East of Ireland Men's Amateur Open Championship in his home country.

The four-round tournament ran from Saturday through Monday at County Louth Golf Club in Baltray, Ireland, where the final two rounds took place Monday. The East of Ireland Championship is an annual tournament dating back to 1941. Alex Maguire, a junior at Florida Atlantic, won the event for the second consecutive year.
Murphy, Maguire, and Caolan Rafferty were tied after the 72nd hole and a three-way playoff ensued. Each player recorded a par on the first hole before Murphy bogeyed the second playoff hole. Maguire defeated Rafferty on the third hole of the playoff.
Murphy, who is from Galway, Ireland, shot 2 under in Saturday's first round before heating up for a 5-under-par scorecard in Sunday's second round. Murphy totaled five birdies on the front nine and six for the day as he entered Monday in a tie for second place at 7 under.
The Lopes junior shot an even-par 72 in the third round with a 2-under final round to force the three-way playoff. Murphy was one shot back for a tie of the lead heading into his final hole, and like he did throughout the final stretch of the GCU season, clutched up for a birdie. Murphy competed as an under-21 participant and was the youngest player to finish in the top 15.
Murphy was instrumental during the Lopes' WAC Championship title run. Murphy teed off in the tournament's final pairing and shot 2 under for the day, including the final putt to secure the five-shot victory over New Mexico State for the conference trophy and the program's first NCAA regional berth. He also shot 6 over to tie for 32nd in a 77-player NCAA regional tournament in Morgan Hill, California.
