For the first time in program history, the Grand Canyon men's golf team punched its ticket into an NCAA regional and will head to the Institute Golf Club in Morgan Hill, California, for the three-day, 54-hole competition beginning May 15.
The Institute Golf Club is located approximately 30 minutes southeast of San Jose, where the tournament will be hosted by San Jose State and San Jose State Authority. Built in 2002, the course's length is driver friendly with the total yardage of 7,952 yards. It is the longest course from the championship tees in California.
GCU earned the NCAA regional qualification by winning the WAC Championship on Sunday in Boulder City, Nevada, at the Boulder Creek Golf Club. The Lopes tied a WAC 54-hole tournament record for lowest team score at 34 under par after finihsing with an 11-under final round to win by five strokes.
Pepperdine earned the Morgan Hill Regional's No. 1 seed with a ranking of sixth in the country. GCU earned the No. 12 seed among 13 teams in the region, with Florida State (2), Mississippi State (3), Arizona (4) and Louisville rounding out the top five. The Lopes head into the regional round ranked No. 112 via Golfstat.
Four Lopes were honored by the WAC in its postseason awards, including fifth-year senior
Parker Reddig, who was named to the first team, and senior
Matthew Braley and junior
Nicky Kling, who each received second-team accolades. Mueller also earned Co-Coach of the Year, becoming the first GCU coach to garner the award.
First-round play begins May 15 with second-round action on May 16 and final round play on May 17. The top five teams from each of the six regions advance to the NCAA Championship on May 26-31 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale.
