The Grand Canyon men's tennis team wrapped up the regular season with a 6-1 loss against Northern Arizona at the GCU Tennis Facility on Saturday.
In their final tune-up match before next week's WAC Tournament, the Lopes (6-13) were competitive in doubles before NAU (21-2) took control in singles to close out the match.
Doubles was close, but the Lumberjacks took the point with wins on all three courts. Junior
Wyatt Anderson and freshman
Mattia Ghedin lost 6-3 at No. 3 while, at the top court, GCU freshman duo
William Alsterback and
David Wekesa battled back from a 4-1 deficit before falling 6-4. The final match at Court 3 was close throughout it, as GCU sophomore
Martim Marujo and junior
Loic Van Zeggelaar lost 7-6 (7-4).
With the 1-0 lead in hand, the Lumberjacks pressed their advantage with first-set wins on all six courts. The Lopes fought hard on Courts 3, 5 and 6 but NAU won all three matches in straight sets to clinch the dual match win at 4-0.
Marujo, at the top singles court, was able to get the Lopes on the board with a 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 win. It was the second win of the season for the GCU sophomore at the No. 1 position.
The Lopes will now turn their attention to the WAC Tournament, which begins on Thursday. The third-seeded Lopes will face No. 6 seed New Mexico State at 1 p.m. (Phoenix time).
