The Grand Canyon tennis teams will be in action in the first round of the WAC Tournament on Thursday in Arlington, Texas. The fourth-seeded Lopes women (12-9) will face fifth-seeded Abilene Christian in the morning match before the third-seeded GCU men (6-13) face sixth-seeded New Mexico State in the afternoon.
Â
3 THINGS TO KNOW
- All-WAC HONORS: The women were well represented in the All-WAC awards with four players being honored. Senior Natasha Puehse and junior Santa Strombacha took home All-WAC first-team singles honors while the two Lopes also landed on the All-WAC first team for doubles. Graduate Madeline Lamoreaux made second-team singles and doubles with freshman partner Anali Kocevar.
- WAC TOURNAMENTÂ REMATCH:Â The women will face Abilene Christian for the second straight year in the first round. The Lopes will be looking for revenge as the eighth-seeded Wildcats took down the top-seeded Lopes in last year's tournament. This year, both teams finished closer in the standings with GCU grabbing the No. 4 seed and ACU finishing as the fifth seed. The Lopes took down the Wildcats 6-1 in Phoenix on April 8 in their lone regular-season matchup.
- RECENT SUCCESS: The men enter conference play with two wins in their last three WAC matches. A road win at Seattle U and a home win over UT Rio Grande Valley propelled the Lopes up the standings in the final weekend of conference play as they clinched the No. 3 seed.Â
SCOUTING
Abilene Christian finished 11-12 overall with a 5-4 record in WAC play. The Wildcats have been on a hot streak to end the regular season with four wins in their last five matches with the lone loss coming to the Lopes. Maria Cascos was the only Wildcat to earn All-WAC honors landing on second-team singles after going 13-6 and 8-1 in WAC play.
New Mexico State went just 3-17 in the regular season with a 1-4 mark in WAC play. The lone conference win came against the Lopes in Las Cruces on April 2. Corey Clarke and Luca Fe D'Ostiani earned All-WAC second team singles honors while Jordy Visser and Yehor Opanasenko made the second-team doubles team.
