LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team wrapped up the opening weekend of conference play with a close 4-3 loss to New Mexico State on Sunday.
The doubles point proved to be the difference as the Lopes (4-11, 0-2 WAC) split the six singles matches after the Aggies (3-14, 1-1 WAC) took the doubles point.
Doubles was close as the Aggies won two matches of three matches in tiebreakers. The Lopes fell at the top court 6-1 before dropping a pair of 7-6 matches at courts two and three.
Down 1-0 the Lopes immediately responded with a 6-0, 6-4 win by freshman
David Wekesa. After the Aggies won at court six the Lopes tied up the match at 2-2 with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win by sophomore
Martim Marujo at court two.
New Mexico State clinched the team win with a pair of three-set wins over sophomore
Jonathan Da Silva and freshman
Paolo Rosati at Nos. 1 and 3. The Lopes wrapped up the match with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 by freshman
Alfred Almasi at court four.
The Lopes will be back in action on the road next weekend at Seattle U on April 8 at 6 p.m.
