The Grand Canyon men's tennis team opened the final three-game homestand of the regular season with a 7-0 loss to UT Arlington on Friday afternoon.
The Lopes (5-13, 1-3 WAC) pushed the first place Mavericks (13-7, 4-0 WAC) to the brink in doubles before UTA took control of the match in singles.
Doubles was competitive throughout as the Lopes dropped the point. GCU jumped out to an early advantage with a win at the top court. GCU freshmen duo of
William Alsterback and
David Wekesa were in control for most of their match winning 6-2. UTA countered with a 6-4 win at court two to set up a winner take all match at court three.
In court three GCU junior
Wyatt Anderson and freshman
Mattia Ghedin were locked in a tight match as the GCU duo and UTA's Dante Teramo and Joan Espinosa Torres traded games back and forth. Both the Lopes and Mavericks were unable to break serve as the match went to a tiebreaker at 6-6. In the tiebreaker UTA jumped out to a 5-1 lead but Anderson and Ghedin came back to tie up the score at 6-6. The Mavericks won the final two points to clinch the doubles point and the 1-0 lead.
The Mavericks used the momentum of the late comeback in doubles and took five of the six first sets in singles. UTA extended their lead quickly with two straight-set wins over Alsterback and Da Silva at courts six and one. The dual-match win was clinched with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Wekesa at court four.
With the win the UT Arlington clinched at least a share of the WAC regular season title.
The Lopes continued to battle on the final two courts as they headed to a 10-point tiebreaker in the third set. GCU sophomore
Martim Marujo won his second set 6-3 before falling in the third set 10-5 while freshman
Alfred Almasi at court three lost a close 10-8 tiebreaker to wrap up the match.
The Lopes will be back in action on Sunday facing UT Rio Grande Valley at 10 a.m. on Senior Day at the GCU Tennis Facility.
