The Grand Canyon men's tennis team wrapped up WAC play with a 5-2 win over UT Rio Grande Valley on Sunday morning at GCU Tennis Facility.
The Lopes (6-12, 2-3 WAC) dropped the doubles point but rallied in singles, winning five of six matches to close out the win and move into a tie for third place in the WAC. It was also a special day for
Loic Van Zeggelaar, who was the only player honored on Senior Day.
Doubles was tightly contested, coming down to the final match as UTRGV (6-17, 1-4 WAC) took an early 1-0 lead. The Lopes held the upper hand early with junior
Wyatt Anderson and sophomore
Jonathan Da Silva winning 6-1 on Court 3. The Vaqueros responded with a 6-2 win at Court 1 over GCU freshmen
William Alsterback and
David Wekesa.
With doubles tied, the point came down to Court 2 tiebreaker at 6-6. GCU sophomore
Martim Marujo and Van Zeggelaar fell behind 5-1 in the tiebreaker but came back within one before UTRGV closed out the 7-5 tiebreaker for the 7-6 match win.
Down 1-0, the Lopes got right to work in singles, taking the first set on three courts. On Court 3, GCU freshman
Alfred Almasi was up 3-0 in his first set when his opponent retired because of injury. UTRGV regained the lead with a straight-set win over Van Zeggelaar at Court 6.
That would be the final Vaqueros win as the Lopes won four straight singles matches. Marujo came back from a 5-4 deficit in his second set to win 6-2, 7-5 before a trio of Lopes won in three sets. Alsterback prevailed at Court 5, winning 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 before freshman
Paolo Rosati won 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to clinch the team win.
Da Silva wrapped up the match with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 win at the No. 1 position.
The Lopes will wrap up the regular season next weekend with a nonconference dual against Northern Arizona at the GCU Tennis Facility on Saturday.
