Conference play concludes at home

The Grand Canyon men's tennis team will wrap up WAC play with two matches at GCU Tennis Facility against UT Arlington and UT Rio Grande Valley this weekend.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW

SEEDING ON THE LINE: With just two conference matches left, the Lopes have the opportunity to jump up the standings. The Lopes are one of four teams with one win in WAC play and two wins on the weekend could catapult the Lopes into the top half of the standings. The top two seeds in the WAC Tournament earn a first-round bye.
FIRST WAC WIN: Over the weekend, the Lopes picked up their first WAC win of the year with a 4-3 victory at Seattle U. After dropping a competitive doubles point, the Lopes came back in singles with four wins in the first five matches to seal the win. Sophomore Jonathan Da Silva clinched the vcitory with a a three-set win at the No. 1 court.
SENIOR DAY: Sunday's match will be Senior Day for Loic Van Zeggelaar. The Lopes' three-year starter will be honored with a pregame ceremony that highlights his accomplishments, including 2021 WAC regular season and WAC Tournament championships and being a participant in the 2021 NCAA tournament.

SCOUTING

UT Arlington has won all three of its WAC matches and sits in first place entering the final weekend of conference play. The Mavericks, in their first season in the conference, have beaten UTRGV 6-1, Abilene Christian 5-2 and New Mexico State 7-0. A win against the Lopes and the Mavericks would clinch at least a share of the WAC regular-season title. Sophomore Anton Shepp leads the team with 12 singles wins at the top two positions. In doubles, Solano Caffarena and Shepp have been the top doubles pair with an 11-3 record.

UT Rio Grande Valley will travel to Seattle U on Friday before taking on the Lopes on Sunday in Phoenix. The Vaqueros are 1-2 in WAC play with a 5-2 win over the Aggies at home. Emilien Burnel has been the top singles player with an 10-11 record that includes nine wins at the No. 1 position. Burnel's specality has been doubles, where he owns a 12-5 record and a 3-2 mark in WAC play.

WHAT'S NEXT?

GCU will wrap up the regular season with a nonconference match against Northern Arizona on April 22 at GCU Tennis Facility.
