LOGAN, Utah – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team kicked off a weekend road trip with a 6-1 loss to Utah State on Saturday.
The Lopes (1-4) struggled in doubles and Utah State (2-2) used the momentum to take five of the six singles matches.
The Aggies took the doubles point with wins at the top two courts. GCU sophomore
Jonathan Da Silva and freshman
David Wekesa lost 6-1 at No. 1 while sophomore
Martim Marujo and freshman
William Alsterback lost a competitive 6-3 match at Court 2.
The Lopes nearly won at the bottom doubles court, but junior
Loic Van Zeggelaar and freshman
Alfred Almasi had their match abandoned while leading 5-2.
In singles, Utah State pressed their 1-0 lead by taking the first set on five of the six courts in singles. Almasi provided the highlight for the Lopes, winning 6-2, 6-2 at Court 3 to get the team on the board.
The Aggies took the remaining courts in straight sets and clinched the dual match win at Court 2 over Da Silva, 6-3, 6-3.
The Lopes will head to Weber State to wrap up the weekend road trip with first serve coming at 11:30 a.m.
