Lopes takes on Utah State, Weber State

The Grand Canyon men's tennis team are back in action after a bye week and the team will hit the road for a pair of road matches against Utah State and Weber State.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW

BUILD MOMENTUM: The Lopes will look to build on the first win of the regular season on Jan. 22 against Portland State. In the 6-1 neutral site win Grand Canyon had it's best performance of the season by taking the doubles point and five of the six singles matches.
WAC WEEKLY HONOR: Sophomore Martim Marujo earned his first WAC Singles Player of the Week honor thanks to his performance against Portland State. Marujo played at the top singles position and took his the first set 6-2 before falling in a 7-6 tiebreaker in the second. In the third set Marujo prevailed in the 10-point tiebreaker winning 10-8.
HOME MATCH UPCOMING: After the weekend road trip the Lopes will return to the GCU Tennis Facility for a home match against UC Riverside on Wednesday. The Lopes and Highlanders will meet for the seventh straight season with doubles starting at 10:30 a.m.

SCOUTING

Utah State will wrap up their season opening homestand when they take on GCU on Saturday. The Aggies earned their first win of the season on Friday with a 7-0 shutout over Eastern Washington. The team is coming off a 11-12 record last year that ended with an appearance in the semifinals of the Mountain West tournament.

Weber State enters this weekend with wins over fellow WAC opponent New Mexico State and UC Riverside who the Lopes will face next week. The Wildcats are looking to end a two-match losing streak against Hawaii and UNLV in Las Vegas. Weber State was picked sixth in the Big Sky preseason poll after coming off an 8-15 record last season.

GCU will host UC Riverside on Feb. 8 at 10:30 a.m. at the GCU Tennis Facility.
