Lopes face San Francisco, Cal Poly

The Grand Canyon men's tennis team fresh off a shutout win at home will hit the road for a pair of matches in San Luis Obispo, Calif. against San Francisco and host Cal Poly.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW

SHUTOUT WIN: The Lopes were dominant in their first home win of the season winning 4-0 against UC Riverside. The top of the lineup carried the Lopes to the win with the top two doubles courts and top three singles courts all winning on Wednesday.
DOUBLES SUCCESS: The Lopes kicked off their match with a strong showing in doubles that earned them the crucial doubles point. Freshman duo William Alsterback and Alfred Almasi won 6-1 at court two while sophomore Jonathan Da Silva and freshman David Wekesa won 6-4 at the top doubles court to clinch the point.
SCHEDULE CHANGE: The Lopes had two schedule changes that will affect a pair of matches in February. GCU will finally face Arizona State on Feb. 24 at the Kiwanis Tennis Center in Tempe as part of the ASU 8-Team Invite. The Lopes and Sun Devils were scheduled to meet in the opening of the weekend back in January but the match was postponed due to weather. Also in March the Lopes match at UNLV has been moved up a day to March 3 at 2 p.m. in Las Vegas.

SCOUTING

San Francisco defeated UC San Diego in their season opener and have yet to win since dropping fourth straight matches. The Dons fell in their first West Coast Conference match to San Diego on Jan. 22 and they lost they fell to UC Davis their last time out on Jan. 28.

Cal Poly began their season with a tough schedule against three Power 5 opponents including No. 4 Michigan and Arkansas at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Mustangs do boast a 4-3 win over BYU on the road on Feb. 3. Junior Noah Berry has been perfect so far in singles with a 3-0 record and he has partnered with Colter Smith in doubles to lead the team with a 3-2 record.

GCU will travel to Santa Clara on Feb. 18.
