SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team lost 7-0 to Cal Poly on the road on Sunday.
The Lopes (2-6) had their neutral site match against San Francisco cancelled yesterday due to rain and came out slow against the host Mustangs (3-3) on Sunday losing the doubles point and all six singles matches in straight sets.
In doubles the Mustangs took the 1-0 lead with wins at the top two doubles courts. Sophomore
Jonathan Da Silva and freshman
David Wekesa lost 6-3 at court one and freshman duo
William Alsterback and
Alfred Almasi lost 6-3 at court two. GCU Frenchmen duo
Adrien Coulome and
Loic Van Zeggelaar were trailing 5-1 in their match at No. 3 when the doubles point was clinched.
In singles the Mustangs pushed their early 1-0 advantage taking five first sets. The only Lope to win his first set was freshman
Mattia Ghedin at court six winning 6-3. The Treviso, Italy native was unable to keep momentum on his side as Cal Poly's Aaron Eliscu won the next two sets to win the match.
The rest of the courts went to Cal Poly in straight sets. Da Silva was locked in a tight battle at court one losing 6-4, 7-5 and Almasi put up a fight at No. 2 losing 6-3 in the first set and 7-6 (7-2) in a tiebreaker in the second set. Coulome in his second singles match of the season lost 6-3, 6-2 at court four.
The Lopes will be back on the road next week traveling to Santa Clara on Feb. 18.
