KAPOLEI, Hawaii – Much like Tuesday's first round, Grand Canyon dialed in on the Kapolei Golf Course's back nine to card a second day, 15 under scorecard for the third lowest round of the 19-team field at the Kapolei Invitational.
GCU is tied for ninth at 22 under as it gained one spot from its Tuesday finish. The Lopes recorded 17 birdies and four eagles and sits just three strokes back from a top-5 finish. Loyola Marymount leads the field at 36 under, followed by Texas State at 31 under and Florida Gulf Coast and Baylor tied at third at 30 under.
Senior
Nicky Kling carded a 5 under with three birdies and two eagles as he is tied for 12th at 9 under heading into the final day Thursday. Kling eagled the par-5 seventh hole and had a stretch of eagle-birdie-par-birdie between holes 14-17.
Kling was not the only Lope who had two eagles for his round as senior
Tommaso Zorzetto tallied two eagles and four birdies for his round. Zorzetto eagled the par-4 sixth hole and much like Kling, had a stretch of two birdies, a par and an eagle over holes 14-17. Zorzetto is tied for 24th at 6 under for the tournament.
Senior
Matthew Pennington tied Kling with a 5 under second round with five birdies, including four on the back nine. Pennington entered the back nine 1 over and quickly got to even with a par on the 10th hole. He had three birdies over his final six holes to put himself in a tie 31st at 5 under for the tournament.
Sophomore
Antonio Bulgheroni had four birdies with three on the front nine as he is tied for 88th at 2 over. Freshman
Gavin O'Neill is tied for 97th at 4 over with one birdie on Wednesday.
The third and final round concludes Thursday with the round beginning at 8 a.m. HT/11 a.m. MST.
Day 1 Recap
After a 3-over-par start through the front nine at Kapolei Golf Course, the Grand Canyon men's golf team rebounded with a 5-under back nine to put them in the middle of the pack after Day 1 at the Kapolei Invitational.
GCU is tied for 10th with host school Hawaii and fellow WAC school California Baptist at 7 under par. The tournament features 19 teams, five of which are ranked in the top 100 of Golfstat rankings. No. 53 Florida Gulf Coast leads the field at 20 under through 18 holes.
Kling leads the Lopes at 4 under and is tied for 17th, tallying six birdies over his first round. Kling started at hole No. 1 and birdied the first and third holes but bogeyed the second and fifth to be even through five. He settled in and totaled four more birdies over his final 13 holes, including four on the back nine and two over his final three holes.
Pennington is one stroke back of Kling at 3 under and is tied for 28th. Pennington had only one bogey to his name and four birdies with three on the back nine of his round. Zorzetto is 1 under and tied for 49th in the 114-player field. Zorzetto had three birdies for the day.
O'Neill shot 1 over (tied for 82nd) and Bulgheroni is 5 over (tied for 103rd). The duo combined for six birdies.
The Lopes are in the middle of the pack with 19 birdies and tied for third overall with 57 pars.
