STOCKTON, Calif. – GCU entered day two of the Visit Stockton Invitational with momentum from the previous round that saw them tied for first among a field of 17 teams. The momentum and sharp play carried over as the Lopes shot 10 under Tuesday to move to 23 under par for the tournament and a first-place tie with 18 holes to play.
The Lopes share the lead with Loyola Marymount at 23 under, five strokes ahead of third-place Utah, with GCU senior
Tommaso Zorzetto also in a tie for the individual lead. LMU had the best second-round score at 13 under, moving up two spots to join GCU in first place.
Of the 17 teams in the field, 11 are even par or better through two rounds at the Reserve at Spanos Park. GCU is third in birdies (40) and tied for second in eagles (three). It also has the second-best par-4 scoring average at 3.95 for the tournament.
Zorzetto is tied for first with a 12 under par scorecard that includes a field-best 15 birdies. Zorzetto recorded eight birdies in Monday's first round and followed that up with seven Tuesday. After starting 1 over through five holes, he registered his first birdie of the day and never bogeyed over the remaining 13 holes. In fact, Zorzetto had more birdies (seven) than pars (six) from holes 6-18 as he stayed at the top of the leaderboard for most of the afternoon.
Lopes senior
Nicky Kling climbed five spots and is tied for sixth at 7 under. Kling had three birdies through the front nine and played even par over the back nine with an exception on the par-5 16th hole. Kling eagled the hole to put him at 3 under for the round and one shot back from a top-five finish. Classmate
Matthew Pennington shot even par Tuesday and is tied for 19th at 4 under. Pennington shot 4 under over his final five holes and also eagled the 16th hole for his second eagle of the tournament.
GCU senior
Warner Beach shot 2 over Tuesday and is tied for 52nd at 3 over for the tournament. Lopes freshman
Gavin O'Neill had a second-round, 1-under scorecard to move to a tie for 62nd at 4 over par. Beach had two birdies while O'Neill had the second most on the team with five Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore
Antonio Bulgheroni notched two birdies and is tied with Beach in 52nd as an individual entry.
The third and final round concludes Wednesday afternoon. GCU will be paired with LMU and Utah in the field's final pairings of the day.
Day 1 recap
The Grand Canyon men's golf team entered Monday with a chance to repeat as Visit Stockton Invitational champions and left the Reserve at Spanos Park in excellent shape to do just that, carding a 13 under par to tie Utah for first through 18 holes in Stockton.
GCU and Utah are three strokes ahead of Loyola Marymount and Washington State, who are tied for third at 10 under, while Fresno State is fifth at 8 under par. The Lopes shot eight strokes better than its closest WAC competition, Utah Valley. The Lopes registered 21 birdies, fourth most among the 17-team field.
Of the 99 players who competed Monday, Zorzetto led the group with eight birdies for his first round, including five over his final nine holes. Starting on the back nine, the Italian opened his day 3 under through five holes and then notched three straight birdies on the first, second and third holes with another on the sixth hole to finish 6 under for the round. He is tied for second with three other golfers and is one stroke behind overall leader Garrett Boe of Cal State Fullerton.
Behind Zorzetto and in the top 15 are senior teammates Kling and Pennington. Both are tied for 11th at 4 under as the duo combined for 10 birdies. Pennington caught fire early as he eagled the par-five 11th hole before following that up with birdies on the 13th, 15th and 16th holes. Kling birdied two of his first three holes and recorded five birdies over his final nine holes played.
Beach is tied for 47th at 1 over while O'Neill is tied for 81st at 5 over. Bulgheroni, entered as an individual, shot even par and is tied for 38th.
GCU resumes play with round two on Tuesday. The Lopes tee off at 9:09 a.m.
