The Grand Canyon women's tennis continued its homestand with a 4-3 loss to Idaho State on Tuesday at GCU Tennis Facility.

GCU (3-8) held a 3-1 lead and was one game away from clinching the match before Idaho State (7-3) completed a furious comeback with three straight singles wins.

At the start of the 3 1/2-hour match, the Lopes took the early lead with doubles point wins at the top two courts. The top GCU duo of junior
Natasha Puehse and sophomore
Santa Strombacha cruised to a 6-1 win while Idaho State countered with a 6-2 win over
Sara Rakim and
Valentina Del Marco at No. 3. The point was clinched at Court 2 where senior duo
Autum Prudhomme and
Fabienne Schmidt won 6-3 over twin pair Lola and Sol O'Lideadha.

Up 1-0, the Lopes continued their strong play by taking four of six first sets in singles. Idaho State picked up its first point with a straight-set win over Prudhomme at No. 5. GCU responded with a dominant 6-3, 6-2 win by Puehse at No. 1 and a 6-4, 6-2 win by Schmidt at Court 2 to make it a 3-1 GCU lead. Puehse and Schmidt each sit at six wins on the season.

The Lopes were on the brink of the team win, but Idaho State clawed its way back to tie it at 3-3, starting with a comeback win at Court 3. Strombacha won her first set 6-1, but ISU's Lola O'Lideadha countered with a 6-3 second set. The sophomore rebounded in the third set and led 5-0, but O'Lideadha won five straight games to tie the set. The match went into a tiebreaker and O'Lideadha won 7-4.

Moments later, Rakim lost at Court 5 in three sets to make it a 3-3 match. The dual came down to senior
Jana Weiss at Court 4, where she dropped the first set but rebounded in a 7-6 (7-2) tiebreaker. In the third set, Weiss fell behind 3-2 and lost 6-3.

The Lopes will be back in action next week against Eastern Washington at home on March 29. The match at GCU Tennis Facility will start at 10 a.m.
