Grand Canyon men's soccer scored five goals, earned a shutout, and won back-to-back games to climb up the WAC standings heading into the final weekend of regular season play. Its on-field production led the Lopes to two WAC weekly honors.

Shaun Joash was named Offensive Player of the Week while sophomore goalkeeper
Leon Schmidt was named Defensive Player of the Week. Joash netted his first career hat trick in GCU's 4-1 victory at Seattle U and added an assist in the 1-0 shutout over San Jose State. Schmidt saved three shots in Seattle and tallied five stops against the Spartans, earning his second shutout of the season.
Joash, who was named preseason WAC Offensive Player of the Year in August, is one of the nation's top forwards and is in the top 10 in multiple offensive categories. In the country, he ranks third in points per game (1.87), fourth in points (28), seventh in goals (11) and eighth in goals per game (0.73). He's also second in the WAC in assists (6) and second in assists per game (0.40). The Hampton Hill, England, native has ramped up his play in conference action, scoring eight goals with three assists for 19 points against league opponents.
Schmidt has compiled a 6-4-2 record in goal as the Lopes goalie, totaling 46 saves and a .687 save percentage. His 3.83 saves per game rank third in the conference. The Hamburg, Germany, product has recorded seven games with four or more saves and three games with five or more. This is the second weekly honor for the keeper, who also was named Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 11.
GCU concludes the regular season at home versus Air Force on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Lopes, who clinched a spot in the WAC Tournament with its 1-0 victory last Sunday, have a chance to earn as high as the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye or as low as the No. 6 and final seed. GCU will honor its nine seniors prior to Saturday's match at GCU Stadium.
