Grand Canyon sophomore goalkeeper
Leon Schmidt was named WAC Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday for his play at home against Utah Valley and California Baptist this weekend.
Schmidt stopped eight shots in total and earned a shutout in the 0-0 draw versus the Lancers on Sunday night. He saved four shots in each game and has tallied at least four saves in six of his eight starts this season.
The Hamburg, Germany, product is first in the WAC saves per game (4.1), third in saves (33) and fourth in save percentage (.702). His saves per game mark also ranks 35th in the nation.
Schmidt and the Lopes bounced back from an 0-1-1 opening WAC weekend to a 1-0-1 showing at home this past weekend, defeating Utah Valley 2-1 and tying California Baptist 0-0. GCU climbed the conference standings with four total points after Sunday and are tied for third place with five games left. The top six teams make the WAC Tournament, which begins Nov. 9 in Riverside, California.
