PROVO, Utah – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team dropped the first match of a weekend road trip, falling 6-1 to BYU.
 
The Cougars took the doubles point with wins on all three courts and took five of six singles matches. GCU's 
Loic Van Zeggelaar was the lone player from the Lopes (0-5) to get a win in singles with a straight-set victory at No. 5.
 
In doubles, BYU (2-0) took the point with wins on all three courts. At No. 1, 
Mariano Argote and 
Stanislas De Samucewicz lost 6-3 while at Court 3. 
Martim Marujo and 
Adrien Coulome also lost 6-3.
 
With the doubles point already clinched for BYU, 
Freddie Grant and Van Zeggelaar played a seven-point tiebreaker with the match tied at 5-5. BYU came out on top and the GCU duo lost a 7-5 tiebreaker.
 
In singles, the first four singles matches were played first due to the indoor court layout and BYU took all four matches in straight sets to clinch the dual-match win. Grant, at No. 2, dropped a close 6-3, 6-4 match while Marujo lost a close first set, 6-4, before losing the second set 6-1.
 
The final two matches were played with BYU leading 5-0 and Van Zeggelaar provided a spark to the Lopes with a 6-1, 6-4 win over BYU's Brigham Andrus.
 
GCU will be back in action on Sunday at Idaho State at 10 a.m.
