The Grand Canyon men's tennis team will continue its heavy road schedule with a pair of matches this weekend at BYU and Idaho State. The Lopes are coming off a trip to Air Force, where GCU dropped 4-3 matches to Creighton and the host Falcons.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- GRANT EARNS WEEKLY WAC HONOR: Graduate student Freddie Grant had a stellar weekend, picking up two singles wins at No. 3 en route to earning his first WAC Singles Player of the Week honors this season. Against Creighton, Grant battled in a 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 win before cruising against Air Force with a 6-4, 6-1 win. Grant's 2-2 record leads the Lopes through the first two weeks of the season.
- SEASON DEBUT:Â Sophomore Wyatt Anderson was the next man up in the GCU lineup over the weekend, making his season debut in singles and doubles. Teaming up with Grant at No. 3 doubles, the pair dropped matches to Creighton 6-2 and to Air Force 6-3. In singles, Anderson played at No. 6 against the Falcons and lost 6-2, 6-2.Â
- ROAD WARRIORS: The Lopes will continue their road-heavy schedule until the home opener later in February. After this weekend, February will start with a match at UC Irvine on Feb. 4 before the Lopes head to New Mexico with a neutral-site match against Santa Clara on Feb. 12 before facing the host Lobos on Feb. 13. GCU's home opener will be on Feb. 20 against UC San Diego.
SCOUTING
BYUÂ won its season opener against Weber State over the weekend with a 6-1 win. The Cougars won the doubles point with wins at Courts 1 and 3 and then cruised in five singles wins. Two singles matches went to a third-set tiebreaker with BYU prevailing at Courts 2 and 3.
Idaho State is looking for its first win of the season, starting 0-3 this year. The Bengals faced Pac-12 opponent Utah for a doubleheader on Jan. 15, when they started the season losing 7-0 and 6-1. Idaho State then traveled to Utah State on Jan. 23 and lost 6-1. Sophomore Patrick Kristensen leads the team with a 2-1 singles record that includes a straight-set win over Utah's Bruno Krenn at No. 5.Â
