U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team wrapped a two-match road trip with a second straight 4-3 loss to Air Force on Sunday.
The Lopes (0-4) dropped the doubles point but rebounded well by winning the final two singles matches in 10-point, third-set tiebreakers.
"The guys had another nail-biter today," GCU head coach
Greg Prudhomme said. "It's difficult to come that close and fall short, but there were a lot of highlights. We came into some tough conditions playing indoors, which is something we don't normally do. The guys did a great job adapting quickly and putting in two good matches over the weekend."
In doubles, Air Force (3-2) took the point with wins on the bottom courts. At Court 2, GCU pair
Martim Marujo and
Adrien Coulome lost 6-1 while
Wyatt Anderson and
Freddie Grant lost 6-3 at No. 3. Meanwhile, at the top court,
Mariano Argote's and
Jiri Novak's match was left unfinished for the second straight day. They were leading 6-5 as Air Force clinched the doubles point.
In singles, Air Force quickly extended its lead to 3-0 with straight-set wins over Argote at No. 1 and Marujo at No. 4.
GCU was able to bounce back with a win from Grant as the fifth-year veteran won 6-4, 6-1 for his second win of the weekend.
After Air Force clinched the dual-match win, the Lopes picked up two more wins in three sets. Coulome, at No. 5, dropped his first set 6-3 but regrouped for a 6-2 win in the second set and a 10-6 win in the third-set tiebreaker. Meanwhile,
Grzegorz Rudnicki made his GCU debut at No. 6 and came back from dropping the first set to win 2-6, 6-4, 10-7.
"It was great to see our brand-new players that arrived in January, Martim getting a win yesterday and Adrien getting a win today," Prudhomme said. "Freddie was the big singles winner on the weekend with back-to-back wins. And it was nice to see Greg come in for us today and get a win for us as well. There were definitely some highlights and we're optimistic to see us getting wins at different points in the lineup."
GCU will hit the road next week for matches at BYU on Friday and Idaho State on Sunday.
