U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team dropped a close 4-3 neutral-site match to Creighton on Saturday at the Air Force Academy.
GCU (0-3) played its best tennis of the young season, grabbing three singles matches, but the doubles point proved to be the difference in the tightly contested match. It was also the first match in wihch the Lopes played on indoor courts due to the snowy conditions in Colorado.
In doubles, Creighton (1-3) took the point with wins at Courts 2 and 3. GCU newcomers
Martim Marujo and
Adrien Coulome teamed up at No. 2 and lost 6-2 while fifth-year senior
Freddie Grant and sophomore
Wyatt Anderson lost 6-2 at No. 3. At No. 1,
Mariano Argote and
Jiri Novak trailed 5-4 when their match was left unfinished.
GCU regrouped well in singles and picked up three wins for the first time this season. Novak, at No. 2, won 6-3, 6-2 while Marujo continued to impress with a straight-set win at No. 4. At Court 4, Grant played in his second straight three-set match and came out on top this time with a 6-7, 7-6, 7-5 win.
Creighton countered with wins at Courts 1, 5 and 6 to get to four points and pick up the win. Argote was locked in a tough battle at No. 1 falling 7-6, 6-4 while Coulome and Anderson lost in straight sets at the bottom of the lineup.
The Lopes will now prepare for a match against Air Force on Sunday at 9 a.m. (Phoenix time).
