The Grand Canyon men's soccer team kicked off its tough spring schedule with a closed scrimmage against the U.S. Men's National Team, which played the Lopes while in Phoenix for its January training camp on Monday at Phoenix Rising FC Stadium.
"We're blessed to be here in Phoenix, where we have amazing weather and we have a lot of professional teams that come down, but to have the U.S. National Team come here and for them to call and ask to scrimmage is an unbelievable honor," GCU head coach
Leonard Griffin said. "For a college team to get this opportunity is few and far between. We're really excited that we got to play them."
The Lopes' spring squad, which includes 12 new faces since the fall NCAA tournament run, played a 60-minute match against the domestic-based U.S. Men's National Team players who were training for two weeks in Phoenix to compete for World Cup Qualifying training camp spots later this month.
"All of these players have ambition to go play at the professional level and they got to see the best," Griffin said. "They can compare themselves and learn a lot about their game to see how they can improve in the future. Any opportunity I got to play when I was in college would have been fantastic, so hopefully the guys understand how privileged they are to be able to play this game today.
Griffin reunited with former LA Galaxy teammate and USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter.
"I think that we competed for the whole match," Griffin said. "They put their best foot forward. On the ball especially in the start of the game, we were able to move the ball around the way we want to. I think we need to get more fit, but that's expected this early in our preseason and coming off of vacation, but it's a good start to the offseason and it's not going to get any easier when you look at our schedule so we're excited."
GCU's next spring match will be on Jan. 29 against Real Salt Lake, which won the MLS Cup in 2009, at Kino Sports Complex in Tucson at 11:30 a.m. The scrimmage will not be open to the public.
February matchups include a tough pair of games against Louisville FC on Feb. 12 at Kino Sports Complex and Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC in Casa Grande, Arizona, on Feb. 20.
On March 5, GCU faces Phoenix Rising FC at the Phoenix Rising Soccer Complex at Wild Horse Pass before returning to Tucson to face FC Tucson at Kino Sports Complex on March 12.
