TUCSON, Ariz. – The Grand Canyon men's tennis team wrapped up the season-opening weekend with a 7-0 loss to No. 15 Arizona on Sunday.
The Lopes (0-2) fought hard in competitive doubles matchups as Arizona (1-0) picked up close wins on all three courts.
At court 1, junior captain
Mariano Argote and sophomore
Jiri Novak fell 6-3 while graduate student
Freddie Grant and sophomore
Loic Van Zeggelaar battled in a close 6-4 match as the Wildcats clinched the point.
Doubles wrapped up with a close 6-4 Arizona win over GCU's
Martim Marujo and
Stanislas De Samucewicz at No. 3.
The nationally ranked Wildcats up 1-0 pushed their advantage in singles taking all five of the six singles matches in straight sets.
Van Zeggelaar lost 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 while Novak fell 6-1, 6-0 at court 2. Arizona clinched the dual-match win with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Marujo.
In the final match of the day, Grant put in a top performance at No. 3, battling back from a 6-0 first set to win the second set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-2) over Arizona's Colton Smith. In the third set, Grant fell in the tiebreaker, 10-7.
The Lopes will be back in action next weekend with a neutral-site match against Creighton and a match at Air Force on Jan. 22-23.
