The Grand Canyon men's soccer team earned its second consecutive weekly award with fifth-year midfielderÂ
Marco Afonso being named the WAC Offensive Player of the Week. He also was named to the College Soccer News national team of the week.
Â
Afonso, who earned his first career WAC weekly award, scored two goals, including the game-winning golden goal in a 3-2 overtime road win at Cal Poly.
In the 61st minute, GCU senior Alejandro Fernandez-Alcaide sent a perfect through ball to Afonso for a one-on-one opportunity. With his left foot, Afonso was able to get the ball by the Cal Poly goalkeeper for the first goal of the game.Â
Cal Poly tied the game with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, sending the game to overtime. Seven minutes into the overtime period, GCUÂ drew a foul at the top of the penalty box, giving Afonso the opportunity to shoot the free kick and bend a game-winning goal into the right side of the net.
Two goals in a single game and four total goals on the season are both career highs for Afonso. He leads the team in goals scored and is tied for the lead with nine points.
Afonso has started all six games for the 25th-ranked Lopes, helping close the nonconference slate with a 5-1 record.
The Lopes kick off WACÂ play against Seattle U on Saturday night at GCU Stadium.
