Coaches put GCU midfielder among 44 players up for national POY award
Grand Canyon midfielder Justin Rasmussen's national reputation grew with more acclaim when he was named to the watch list for the Hermann Trophy, the most prestigious individual award in college men's soccer.
Rasmussen, a fifth-year player from Las Vegas, was among 44 players who were selected by the United Soccer Coaches to be monitored for the 54-year-old national player of the year award. A coaches committee will select 15 semifinalists to be announced on Dec. 15 and the winner will be honored on Jan. 7 in St. Louis.
The watch list was revealed Thursday, when Rasmussen opened the season with a goal and an assist in the 22nd-ranked Lopes' 3-1 opening win against Illinois-Chicago, who also had defender Jacob Graiber on the list. Rasmussen used a COVID-19 waiver to return for a fifth season after leading GCU to its second NCAA tournament appearance in three years.
Rasmussen is the only WAC player who was chosen for the Hermann watch list.
"Emotions are going to be high for me all year with this being 'The Last Dance,' as I've been liking to call it," said Rasmussen, who is a team captain for a second season.
With five goals and two assists in a shortened 8-2 spring season, Rasmussen earned All-America third-team and All-WAC first-team honors. That led to being named to the Preseason All-America second team for this season. He also scored a team-best six goals in the 2019 season, two years after logging 23 minutes as a freshman.
After becoming the program's first Division I All-American last season, his return helped keep GCU in the top 25 for this season.
"The sky's the limit with this team," Rasmussen said. "We've got a lot of depth and the support from the coaching staff. We've got so much more to give."
