The Grand Canyon men's golf team signed Sam Murphy of Galway, Ireland, to a national letter of intent for the 2021-22 season.
"We are excited to add Sam for next year," GCU assistant coach
Clayton Sikorski said. "Getting to know Sam and his family over the last year has been a pleasure. We are getting someone with great international experience, in very tough conditions. It's always great to add a player who has won their National Junior Championship. Sam won the Irish Boys Amateur Championship last year by eight shots."
Murphy recorded his most emphatic win last year when claiming the prestigious Irish Under 18 Open title, previously won by Rory McIlroy. Murphy fired a course-record 65 (7 under par) in the final round to finish at 11 under par and win by eight shots.
He has multiple domestic achievements, winning the Munster Under 18 Open last year and the Connacht Under 16 Open in 2018. Murphy has shown excellent match-play ability too. He went undefeated in helping his club win National Men's Junior Cup title at age 16. He has won the Order of Merit title on two occasions, reached a high of No. 21 on the European under-18 rankings and currently has a handicap of plus-4.4.
