Jesse Newman was named the WAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week from his weekend performance at the Roadrunner Invitational in San Antonio.
Newman threw over 70 meters in javelin for the first time in two years and won the event with a mark of 70.20 meters. The throw is nearly 40 feet better than any other mark in the WAC this season and also ranks 18th in NCAA Division I this year.
The Oregon native looks to continue to improve upon his performances, as he was unable to compete last year from to the cancelation of the outdoor season due to COVID-19. Newman is a decorated GCU athlete as he holds the school record in javelin and has been a qualifier for the NCAA Championships.
The Lopes will host their last home meet of the season on Saturday at the Canyon Invitational.
