The Grand Canyon men's soccer team hits the road to take on Incarnate Word in its fourth matchup of the 2020-21 season. The Lopes have the best winning percentage in the WAC with a 3-0 mark and received 27 votes for this week's United Soccer Coaches Poll.
The match will be streamed live on the
WAC Digital Network.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- RETURNING AWARD WINNERS: The Lopes have come together on both sides of the ball for a 3-0 record, the best start to a season since 2012. Senior midfielder Justin Rasmussen leads the team with three goals on offense, followed closely by freshman forward Maximilian Moeller with two. In the team's last match, the GCU defense recorded its first shutout of the season and held Air Force to only four shots with just one on goal.
- MAKING AN ENTRANCE: Two Lopes players scored career-first goals in the season opener vs. Houston Baptist. Moeller scored GCU's first goal of the season while senior forward Rey Gaytan made the winner.
- END OF AN ERA: GCU head coach Schellas Hyndman announced that he will be retiring at the conclusion of this season. Hyndman is the second-winningest active coach in Division I men's soccer with a 506-169-58 head coaching record. He was inducted into the United Soccer Coaches Association Hall of Fame in the offseason in recognition of his 37-season coaching career.
SCOUTING
Incarnate Word is tied for seventh in the WAC with a 1-2 record after being picked to finish 10th in the conference coaches' preseason poll. The Cardinals opened the season with a 3-2 win over UNLV at home before taking back-to-back losses to Dixie State and California Baptist, first at home and then on the road.
Five student-athletes have scored for the Cardinals this season, with two recording three points to lead the team: fifth-year midfielder/forward Kevin Gutia and senior midfielder/forward Koen Vos.
Incarnate Word finished the 2019 season with a 5-12 record, going 2-9 in the WAC. Their regular-season finish did not earn them a spot in the 2019 WAC Tournament.
The Lopes lead the series against the Cardinals 6-2. In the last meeting, GCU took down Incarnate Word 1-0 in its conference opener at home.
Marios Andreou, now a junior, scored the lone goal to give the Lopes the win.
LAST TIME OUT
- GCU defeated Air Force 1-0 at home in its first shutout of the season.
