The Grand Canyon women's tennis team dropped their home opener to Arizona in the first matchup between the schools at the GCU Tennis Facility. The previous nine matches had all taken place in Tucson.
The Wildcats (1-0) took early control of the match with wins in all three doubles matches. At No. 2 seniors
Autum Prudhomme and
Emilia Occhipinti battled in a close 6-4 loss to Arizona's Talya Zandberg and Abby Amos. The point was clinched by Arizona at No. 3 with a 6-3 win over GCU newcomer duo
Joely Lomas and
Taylor Andersen.
GCU's (0-2) performance in singles was highlighted by a pair of solid outings by sophomore
Natasha Puehse at No. 1 and junior
Jana Weiss at No. 3. Puehse controlled her match from the start and led wire to wire in a 6-2, 6-2 straight set win. Meanwhile on the court next to her, Weiss battled in a nearly two-hour long match that went three sets. The junior from Austria prevailed in the 10-point tiebreaker to win 7-5, 5-7 1-0 (10-4).
Arizona took the first set on the other four singles courts and turned those matches into straight set wins. GCU freshman
Taylor Andersen fought back in her second set, after losing the first 6-2, to nearly force a third set falling 7-5 against the No. 90 ranked singles player in the country Emily Maxfield.
The Lopes will now hit the road for the next five matches starting with a trip to Cal Poly on Feb. 5.
