The Grand Canyon women's tennis team dropped a road match at Cal Poly on Friday afternoon.
The Mustangs (1-0) who returned three of the team's top four singles players from a 9-2 shortened 2020 season took control of the match early with the doubles point and went on to win five of the six singles matches.
In doubles the GCU (0-3) senior duo of
Emilia Occhipinti and
Autum Prudhomme won their first match of the year together winning a close 7-5 match at No. 2. In the other two matches both teams were tied at 4-4 with the deuce point going the way of Cal Poly. With that 5-4 lead the Mustangs closed out doubles wins at Nos. 1 and 3 with 6-4 scores.
In singles sophomore
Natasha Puehse, the reigning WAC Singles Player of the Week backed up that award with her second straight win at No. 1. The Scottsdale, Ariz. native took the first set 6-4 but stumbled in the second falling 1-6. Puehse would regroup and take the final set 6-3 over Cal Poly's Dominique Stone.
The Mustangs would control the rest of the singles matches with straight set wins on the other five courts. Junior
Jana Weiss lost her match with close 6-4, 6-4 set scores while
Joely Lomas nearly forced a tiebreaker in her second set falling 7-5.
The Lopes will back on the road on Feb. 13 when they travel to Tucson to face Arizona. The Lopes and Wildcats met earlier this season with Arizona winning 5-2 on Jan. 23.
