TUCSON, Ariz. – The Grand Canyon women's tennis team was edged 4-3 by Arizona on Saturday in Tucson at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
GCU (0-4) took advantage of an incomplete lineup for Arizona (5-1) to win by default at the No. 3 doubles position and the No. 6 singles position. Arizona won 6-3 over
Natasha Puehse and
Jana Weiss at No. 1, but the senior duo of
Emilia Occhipinti and
Autum Prudhomme won the final match 6-3 at No. 2 to take a 1-0 lead with the doubles point.
Heading into singles, the Lopes earned another free point with Prudhomme picking up a win by default at No. 6. Arizona responded in singles to erase the 2-0 GCU lead with two quick straight-set wins at Nos. 4 and 5.
Tied 2-2, the match came down to the final three singles matches. Occhipinti, at No. 2, lost her first set 6-3 and battled to a tiebreaker in the second before Arizona's Jelena Lukic escaped with a 9-7 win for a 3-2 Wildcats dual lead.
Puehse and the Lopes responded to tie the match with a hard-fought win at No. 1. The sophomore from Scottsdale, Arizona, lost her first set 6-4, but responded with a 7-6 (7-1) win in the second. It was smooth sailing from there with Puehse controlling the third set, winning 6-3 for her third straight singles win.
The deciding match for both teams came down to No. 3 with Weiss and Arizona's Tayla Zandberg. The Austrian battled in the first two sets, losing the first 7-5 before winning 7-5 in the second. In the third set, Weiss ran out of steam, losing 6-1 for a 4-3 Arizona win.
GCU will be back in action in two weeks, when the team travels to Des Moines, Iowa, for matches against Omaha on Feb. 27 and Drake on Feb. 28.
