DES MOINES, Iowa – The Grand Canyon women's tennis team picked up their first win of the season defeating Omaha 5-2 in a neutral site match.
The Lopes (1-4) were down early 1-0 after doubles but rallied winning five of the six singles matches.
"The girls strong team spirit pulled them through today after being down after doubles," head coach
Greg Prudhomme said. "They all fought with a great attitude and supported one another.
In doubles Omaha (5-5) took the point with a narrow win at the top position. The Mavericks defeated
Taylor Andersen and
Joely Lomas 6-2 at No. 3 but
Emilia Occhipinti and
Autum Prudhomme came back with a 6-3 win at No. 2.
The point all came down to
Natasha Puehse and
Jana Weiss who pushed their match to a tiebreaker. Omaha's Madison Gallegos and Ines Absisan prevailed winning in 7-6 (7-4).
Down 1-0 the Lopes regrouped and won four of the six first sets in singles. Freshman Andersen won her first singles match of her collegiate career defeating Omaha's Lillian Tiemeyer 6-2, 6-0. The Lopes would build on that momentum with straight set wins by Weiss and Lomas at courts three and five.
Up 3-1 the dual-match win was clinched by senior captain Occhipinti who swept Absisan 6-1, 6-4. That singles win was the 43rd of her career which ties her with
Tatum Prudhomme for the most singles wins in GCU's D-I era.
Autum Prudhomme would provide the exclamation point for GCU winning the final singles match of the day in a 10-point tiebreaker 6-4, 7-5, 1-0 (10-3).
The Lopes will look for a weekend sweep when they face Drake on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. Phoenix time.
