The Grand Canyon women's tennis team will face Arizona for the second time this season when the team travels to Tucson for a noon Saturday match. The Lopes and Wildcats met for the first time this season on Jan. 23, when GCU lost 5-2.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
ADDED MATCH: The women's team added a home match to this season. GCU will face New Mexico for a Monday home matinee on March 8 at 11 a.m. The Lopes and Lobos last met in 2015 on the road, and the two teams haven't played in Phoenix since 1990.
HOME MATCHES NEXT MONTH: Along with the added match against New Mexico, the Lopes will play three other home matches in March. GCU will face Colorado State on March 16 before hosting Idaho State in back-to-back matches on March 23-24.
RECENT SINGLES SUCCESS: The Lopes have played well in singles, winning three matches in the past two contests against Arizona and Cal Poly. Sophomore Natasha Puehse picked up two wins and WAC Singles Player of the Week honors while junior Jana Weiss won her first match against the Wildcats in three sets.
SCOUTING
Arizona started the season strongly with a 5-1 record with its only loss to Texas Tech on the road. Its Feb. 6-7 home matches against Gonzaga were postponed. After facing GCU this weekend, Arizona will compete against Kansas and Kansas State on the road to wrap up nonconference play.
Gitte Heynemans and Abby Amos have led the Wildcats in singles with records of 6-0 and 5-0, respectively. Amos and Heynemans have played this season between singles positions Nos. 4-6 and solidified the back end of the Arizona lineup, providing the team with two points nearly every match. Heynemans and doubles partner Khim Iglupas also have been perfect at the No. 1 doubles position with a 3-0 record and a 4-1 mark overall.
WHAT'S NEXT
GCU will travel to Iowa to face Omaha and Drake on Feb. 27-28.
