The Grand Canyon women's tennis team opened the spring season with a 7-0 loss Monday at No. 20 Arizona State. It was the first meeting between the two schools since 1993.
ASU took the doubles point, winning on all three courts and taking two of the three matches by 6-0 scorelines. GCU sophomore
Natasha Puehse and junior
Jana Weiss, who teamed up in doubles last year, competed in the top spot and fell 6-3. Newcomers
Taylor Andersen and
Joely Lomas saw their first action with the Lopes, competing at No. 3 in a 6-0 loss.
In singles, the Sun Devils won all six matches in straight sets but the Lopes competed on multiple courts. At the No. 1 position, Puehse lost her first set 6-2 but bounced back to make it a tighter 6-4 scoreline in the second against Arizona State's Ilze Hattingh, the 37th-ranked singles player in the country.
After falling 6-3 in her first singles match at No. 4, senior
Autum Prudhomme bounced back and nearly forced a tiebreaker before losing the second set 7-5. ASU finished the sweep at No. 6 with GCU freshman
Aline Buhr seeing her first collegiate action in a 6-3, 6-2 loss.
The Lopes will be back in action this weekend when they host Arizona at the GCU Tennis Facility.
