Lopes add Alejandro Fernandez Alcaide to 2020 roster
Grand Canyon men's soccer signed junior college transfer Alejandro Fernandez Alcaide, a Spain native who played right back for the past two seasons at Illinois Central.

"We are excited to have Alejandro join our program for the next two seasons of his collegiate career," GCU head coach Schellas Hyndman said. "He is a typical Spanish player: technically sound, calm under pressure, able to solve problems in tight spaces with high levels of game intelligence. In addition to being a strong defender, Alejandro utilizes his speed, stamina andΒ ball possession-oriented qualities to get forward and serve as an offensive threat. With a great engine to get up and down the field, we have no doubt Alejandro will have a significant impact in improving our team both defensively and offensively."

Fernandez Alcaide made an immediate impact while at Illinois Central, starting 14 games as a defender during his freshman season and helping the Cougars to a 10-4-3 season and a regional championship. He scored the game-winning goal against Lincoln Land on Sept. 29, 2018, in a 3-2 win.

As a sophomore, he started 17 of 19 games played, helping the defense record 14 shutouts and finish 16-4-1 and third at last year's National Junior College Championships in Tyler, Texas.

Before his collegiate career, Fernandez Alcaide competed at the highest youth level for Alboraya UD in his hometown of Valencia, Spain.
