Grand Canyon men's soccer announced the signing of Cameron Conaway, who comes from Las Cruces, New Mexico, to join the Lopes as a freshman this year.
Â
"We are very excited to welcome Cameron to our team," GCU head coach
Schellas Hyndman said. "Initially, we identified Cameron at one of our ID camps here at GCU, where he caught our eye and we made it our priority to continue monitoring his progress. Cameron is a very versatile player, able to operate in number of different positions on the left flank or centrally in midfield. He possesses a quality range of passing, he's precise and he has a cannon of a left foot. We believe that Cameron, after adapting to the college game, will become an important player for GCU in the future."
Â
Conaway had an impressive high school career as a defender at Mayfield High School in Las Cruces. He started every game for all four seasons and served as team captain for three years. As a junior, he helped the Trojans to the New Mexico state championship game, leading the team with 15 goals and 14 assists that season. He was named to the all-district second team as a junior after Mayfield went 18-0 in district play. The Trojans were district champions for three of Conaway's four seasons.
Â
As a senior, Conaway earned a spot on the all-state first team as well as all-district first team. He also was named an All-Star Select for the state his senior year after recording 14 goals and 12 assists.
Â
"I chose GCU because of the people," Conaway said. "They wanted to help benefit me in any way possible and I loved the culture that I was surrounded with when I got there. I'm looking forward to working hard and contributing to the team and can't wait to play in front of the amazing people at GCU."
Â
Conaway is planning to major in marketing at GCU after finishing in the top 10% of his high school class. He received an academic letter for a 3.8 GPA or higher, earned a Junior Leadership Award in 2018 and was a member of the National Honor Society from 2017-19.
