William Culhane bolsters the group of 10 fall additions to Grand Canyon men's soccer with experience he can bring to the field this spring.
"We are excited to welcome Billy Culhane to the GCU soccer program," Lopes head coach
Schellas Hyndman said. "Billy comes to us from Edmond, Okla., where he excelled. Billy has a strong and experienced soccer background having trained and played in England. He is a natural left fullback and brings good one-on-one defending as well as defending as part of a unit.
"Billy also has great attacking strengths. He understands how and when to combine in the attack and has the ability to pick out teammates with precise services. Billy's technical skills and soccer knowledge puts him in a position to help the Lopes immediately this spring"
The left back spent the fall practicing with GCU and played in the Purple-White Scrimmage at GCU Stadium in October. He will make his U.S. collegiate debut in the spring with the Lopes.
"What I've enjoyed the most so far has definitely been getting to know all the guys," Culhane said. "Sometimes, it can be tough joining a new group but, since Day 1, everyone on the team has been very welcoming, which has made my switch to GCU that much easier."
Culhane joined the Lopes after competing for the Richmond International Academic and Soccer Academy in Leeds, England, from 2017 to 2020. In his three seasons with the academy, the Edmond, Oklahoma, native recorded a total of 10 goals and 14 assists.
During his high school career, he helped lead Deer Creek to an Oklahoma state title in 2015 and recorded 15 goals and 22 assists as a four-year starter.
"One of the main reasons I chose GCU over other schools was because of how helpful the coaching staff was throughout the recruiting process," Culhane said. "I was able to text or call (assistant) coach Vlastimir (Davidovic) at any time of the day and know that he would answer any questions that me or my family had quickly and honestly."
