SAN DIEGO — The Grand Canyon women's tennis team kicked off the fall season successfully at the SDSU Fall Classic over the weekend.
Eight Lopes were scattered throughout six singles draws and three doubles draws. Returning All-WAC first-team doubles duo Autum Prudhomme and Celia Morel won a draw while the Lopes also won 12 singles matches.
Prudhomme, a junior, and Morel, a senior, competed in the third doubles flight and defeated pairs from McNeese State and Cal State Northridge both by 6-2 scores to advance to the finals. In the draw final, the GCU pair took down UTEP's Eve Daniels and Lina Sachica 6-4.
Lopes sophomore Jana Weiss, a transfer from Southern Utah, teamed up with freshman Natasha Puehse in the top doubles flight and picked up a Power-5 win with a 6-4 victory over Lindsay Hung and Katya Hersh of Utah.
Pueshe also competed in the top singles flight and won her opening match 6-3, 6-1 against Tamara Culibrk of San Jose State. Morel won a pair of matches against Jolene Coetzee of CSUN (6-4, 2-6, 6-4) and Sofia Moreno from McNeese State (6-2, 6-1).
GCU senior Celina Buhr bounced back with a pair of singles wins after dropping her first match while Prudhomme and junior Ludovica Infantino each won two singles matches.
The Lopes will be back in action at the ITA Southwest Regional from Oct. 17-21.
