The Hyndman 500 has been a long, winding race to reach rare air.
The success of Grand Canyon men's soccer head coach Schellas Hyndman's career puts him in a unique position that adds intrigue to Friday night's GCU season opener. If his Lopes defeat Northern Kentucky in a 7 p.m. game at GCU Stadium, Hyndman will become the fifth Division I coach ever to accumulate 500 wins.
With a 499-158-56 record, Hyndman could become the only active Division I coach besides South Carolina's Mark Berson (507 wins) to join the 500-win club.
"With anybody that hits 500 wins, the common denominator is that they've been in the game a long time," said Hyndman, entering his 36th season as as collegiate head coach. "And I have been in the game a long time. I've been fortunate to be with some outstanding programs and coached some wonderful players to build that win record. To be at the verge of 500 was never anything I thought about."
The latest 33 of Hyndman's wins have come at GCU in the previous four seasons, including the Lopes' breakthrough 2018 season of five top-25 victories and a WAC Tournament championship. It was the ninth-best single-season improvement in Division I men's soccer last season.
Hyndman previously led Eastern Illinois (1977-83) and SMU (1984-2007), but his historic win total does not even include another 62 victories that he accumulated as a six-year Major League Soccer head coach for FC Dallas (2008-13).
"I've never looked at this as a job," Hyndman said. "I've always looked it as a passion and as a way of life. This is how all my life has been – coaching, recruiting, being around these young men and working with wonderful people at the institution. To me, it's been a great ride.
"I would like to get the win so we can forget about it and get on with the job."
