SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Grand Canyon men's tennis team ended the Golden State Invitational on a high note Saturday by defeating conference opponent New Mexico State 4-0 and winning the consolation bracket.
It was a special day for head coach
Greg Prudhomme, who won his 250th match at GCU and now has 133 wins on the women's side and 117 on the men's side.
"Up to this point, that is the match of the year," Prudhomme said. "Any time we can beat New Mexico State, we'll take it. They've gotten the better of us over the last few years. They have always been long battles, including the great long match in the semifinals of the conference tournament last year. So to go out there and get the job done in four straight singles match was certainly a great sign of where our level is at."
The match between the Lopes and Aggies was the only match played due to weather and started with singles.
Senior
Lucas Grego was the first to finish at No. 4, picking up his 10th singles win of the season with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Enrique Asmar. Junior
Lorenzo Fucile and sophomore
Freddie Grant followed with straight-set wins at Nos. 1 and 5. The match was clinched by senior
Mathieu Rajaonah at No. 2 with a 6-4, 6-1 win.
Junior
Valentin Lang's and freshman
Jakub Novak's matches were left unfinished.
"We certainly won't overcelebrate," Prudhomme said. "We know they are a tough team and we have a good rivalry and we will continue to expect long matches when we play them. But the guys did a great job bouncing back again after the tough loss to Fresno State yesterday to get two straight 4-0 wins. Definitely a great way to end the weekend."
The Lopes and Aggies will meet again in WAC play in Seattle on April 12.
