The Grand Canyon men's tennis team had to battle the weather as well as Liberty on a rain-soaked Tuesday at the GCU Tennis Facility.
Liberty (6-8) defeated GCU 5-2 by taking the doubles point and winning at the top three singles positions.
The match was originally scheduled for 11 a.m. but constant overnight rain and lightning in the area forced both teams to wait it out until the storm broke just long enough for the match to start at 4 p.m.
In doubles the Lopes (8-5) lost the point falling at No. 3 and at No. 1 for the first time this season.
Lucas Grego and
Freddie Grant lost 6-3 in the third position while the top pair of
Lorenzo Fucile and
Mathieu Rajaonah lost for the first time as Liberty took the point winning in a 7-6 (7-5) tiebreaker.
Valentin Lang and
Jakub Novak won at No. 2 for their fourth straight win.
In singles Grego tried to reinvigorate the Lopes winning in straight sets at No. 4 to extend his team leading singles record to 11-1. But the Flames quickly responded taking the next three matches, all in straight sets, from the top three singles position to earn the team win.
Novak would respond with a hard fought three set win at No. 6, while Grant fell in three sets in the final match of the day.
The Lopes will look to regroup and finish the week strong when they head to Hawaii for a pair of matches on Saturday and Sunday.
