ELK GROVE, Calif. – The Grand Canyon men's golf team put together a solid tournament and finished third at the Sacramento State Invitational.
The two-time defending champs did not surrender the title easily, with the Lopes putting together their best round during the final round. GCU's closing round of 283 was a final-round low, but the Lopes (855 total) finished behind winner Cal State Fullerton (847) and runner-up Long Beach State (854).
"I'm really proud of the boys today," GCU head coach Mark Mueller said. "We had the low round of the day in tough conditions. They really competed and took pride in playing hard."
GCU was led by senior
Filip Lundell, who tied for fourth place after firing rounds of 69, 71 and 69 for a 209 total. Junior
Jake Chanen (tied for 17th) finished with a 216, followed by junior
T.J. Nolan (tied for 21st, 217), freshman
Matthew Braley (tied for 26th, 218) and junior
Trevor Lampson (tied for 39th, 220).
The Lopes also got strong play from sophomore
Adam Veenstra, who played as an individual. Veenstra fired a pair of sub-par rounds and finished in 11
th place with a 213 total.
Medalist honors went to Jack Dyer of CSU Fullerton with a 206 score.
GCU finished ahead of WAC programs California Baptist (fourth, 866) and Seattle U 12th (881).
GCU is back in action on March 15-16 when it hosts the GCU Invitational at GCU Golf Course.
