SANTA BARBARA, Calif.—The Grand Canyon men's tennis team will play its third straight match on the road when it faces UC Santa Barbara (3-4) on Sunday.
The Lopes (6-1) have been the best team in the WAC this season, leading second-place New Mexico State by 1 1/2 games. GCU, winners of five matches in a row, is off to its best seven-game start since 2012 when it opened the season at 8-1.
Through seven games, the team has a combined 32-10 record in singles and 15-2 record in doubles.
Senior
Lucas Grego and
Freddie Grant have been pacing the Lopes in singles with 7-0 and 6-0 records, respectively.
Valentin Lang also sits at 6-1 and
Lorenzo Fucile is 5-2 from the No. 1 position. In doubles, the top pair of
Mathieu Rajaonah and Fucile are 6-0 while the two other pairs each have one loss.
UCSB has been one of the most dominant teams in the country over the past four seasons with a 70-30 record, including a conference mark of 18-3 and four straight appearances in the NCAA tournament. Last season, the Gauchos were 11-0 at home.
This year, UCSB has only played one match at home -- a 5-2 loss to San Diego on Feb. 10 that started its current three-match losing streak.
The Lopes are 0-2 all-time against UCSB with a road loss in 1982 and a home loss in 2016.
