SANTA BARBARA, Cailf.—The Grand Canyon men's tennis team saw their five-match winning streak snapped on Sunday with a 6-1 loss to UC Santa Barbara. The Gauchos quickly won the doubles point but the Lopes battled in singles pushing three matches to a third set.
In doubles the Gauchos took the point winning at Nos. 2 and 3.
Jakub Novak and
Valentin Lang lost 6-1 and
Lucas Grego and
Freddie Grant fell 6-3. It was only the second loss for each of those doubles teams this season.
Mathieu Rajaonah and
Lorenzo Fucile's match was unfinished at No. 1 with the pair leading 5-3.
In singles UCSB took five of the first sets and won the first two matches in straight sets at Nos. 6 and 2. Grego kept his perfect record intact and improved to 8-0 in singles with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4. Six of Grego's wins have come in straight sets.
The Gauchos would win the final three matches, all coming in three sets. Grant at No. 5 won the first set but dropped the final two, while Lang and Fucile each bounced back and won the second set after dropping the first but were unable to win the third set.
The Lopes will have another tough nonconference opponent and a quick turnaround on Tuesday when they face No. 14 UCLA.
